Gilad Ratman “Che Che the Gorgeous”

Der israelische Video-Künstler Gilad Ratman präsentiert eine Auswahl seiner jüngsten Videoarbeiten unter dem Titel “Che Che the Gorgeous”. Seine Sujets sind geprägt von fragmentarischen Erzählungen, surrealistisch anmutenden Handlungen ohne Dialog und einer die Situation verfremdenden Tonspur. Die Arbeitsweise des Künstlers orientiert sich in subversiver Art am experimentellen Kino und lässt Statisten in angeleiteten Performances auftreten. In dem Video “Che Che the Gorgeous”, welches der Ausstellung als Titelmotiv dient, verknüpft Gilad Ratman das Geschrei merkwürdiger Zwitterwesen mit Menschenköpfen in der Wüste mit einer Studioaufnahme des Liebeslieds “forever young”. Verzweiflung, Sehnsucht und die ironische Brechung von Emotionen sind dabei die Grundmotive und in zwei überlappende Szenen eingebettet. Die verwegene Atmosphähre seiner Filme weckt Vorstellungen von magischen Ritualen und Welten. Mit der musikalischen Untermalung wird eine Metaerzählung ins Werk gesetzt, welche den Videos ihren einprägsamen, fast hypnostischen Charakter verleiht. Die Zusammenwirkung von Bild- und Tonspuren deutet deren Konstruiertheit an und führt die fragile Natur unserer Vorstellungskraft vor.
Wo der Künstler in den Abgründen der menschlichen Existenz schürft, bringt er atavistische Erscheinungen in Form von Masken und Kostümen an die Oberfläche. Seine Erzählungen kommen noch ohne Worte aus, Kommunikation wird gestisch formuliert und in groteske Bewegungen gesteigert. Es ist der verlockende dämonische Kern, welcher den Betrachter verführt und seinen Blick an die Projektionsfläche bannt, zwischen infantiler Neugier und abwehrender Erkenntnis. In Gilad Ratmans Filmen passiert etwas Wahres, das in seiner Undeutbarkeit Unruhe hinterlässt – und ganz willkommen erscheint in diesen Zeiten.

Gilad Ratman, geb. 1975 in Haifa, lebt und arbeitet in New York. Er studierte an der Bezalel Academy for Art and Design in Jerusalem/ Israel und absolviert das MFA-program der Columbia University New York, School of the Arts. Seine Filme wurden bereits an zahlreichen internationalen Film-Festivals und in Ausstellungen gezeigt, u.a. The Israel Museum for Art/ Jerusalem, Museum Beelden Aan Zee/ Den Haag, Kulturhuset/ Stockholm, The Jerusalem International Film Festival, Center for Contemporary Art/ Tel Aviv, Braverman Gallery/ Tel Aviv.

Gilad Ratman makes and directs films. Although his works are comprehensive productions that pursue a subversive cinematic strategy. They include acting participants, props, a carefully chosen setting, intricate choreography, editing (or postproduction) and a thematic soundtrack. In his films Gilad Ratman uses performative structures and leaves room for improvisation.
The exhibition will showcase selected works from 2005 till 2008; chosing the title of one work, 'Che Che the Gorgeous', is an effort to subsume the chosen works under its suggestive, yet puzzling character. Audacious and atmospherically rich images, without connection of a plot, mark Gilad Ratmans non-traditional cinematic style. The films' imagery stirs up notions of magic rituals and fantastic worlds, but reveals at the same time its constructedness and the fragile nature of our believes. Below the surface of masquerade and costume, the artist's interest focuses on the deeper layers of the human condition in its atavistic residues. The lack of spoken communication and the exaggerated use of gestures lets the human actors appear like grotesque beings. It's the underlying demonic grin which lures the viewers to the screen and catches them between infantile believe and
informed distrust. In Gilad Ratman's films something true happens, and this leaves us with a certain disquietness that we cannot seek, but that we can happily welcome when it comes to us in these times.

Gilad Ratman was born in Tel Aviv, Israel in 1975 and lives and works in New York City. He studied at Bezalel Academy for Art and Design in Jerusalem/ Israel and is now MFA-Student at Columbia University New York, School of the Arts. His videos have been shown at various international Film-Festivals and exhibitions, p.e.
